CNN reports on a webdesigner from London who unknowingly helped taking down some government websites in Iran. His website offers a very simple functionality through which you can have a website of your choice be refreshed every so many seconds. Protesters in Iran have massively used the service to overheat e.g. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad‘s websites. Ryan Kelly at first took down his website after receiving messages that his website was being abused. But in the mean while he has decided to let his service be used in this way and thus choose sides in this political matter which has caused an outcry for justice all over the world. Another great example of how the Internet keeps on breaching our traditional power patterns. Although few people will be alarmed about the way this service is used right now, it will be interesting to see how it can/will be used in less laudable ways.

  • @ROBIN: No idea about that. I guess they could trace your IP just like they can with any 'normal' visitor. What do you want to use it for?
  • ROBIN
Rather not say specifically. Let's just say it's a radical religious site and not a country or government attack.
  • Ok. Let us know how it works out ;) Feel free to send me a private message with more details if you want to keep it under the radar. Cheers,

My concern is this: If you are part of a group of people using pagreeboot to attack a particular website can you be identified/traced in "anyway" as being one of those people using that method?

I came across the suggestion - on a forum here in England - including the cut & paste link for using pagreeboot to attack a particular web site.

    A reply would be appreciated.

Ralph, what do you think about the action for Iran? Have joined pagereboot-action? We need all the help we can get!
  • Geoff, no I haven't. I don't find it easy to make up my mind about Iranian politics. No doubt the current leader is capable of vote corruption but I guess it's the Iranians themselves who'll have to take the lead in this. Sadly I have to rely on European institutions giving Europeans information about what really happened. If it comes true dat Ahmadinejad has corrupted these elections I will certainly cast judgement. But for the moment an objective point of view is difficult. Revolutions are necessary but you want to build them on solid and truthful ground. I'm waiting for some more solid truth then what I'm hearing right now.

I'm really worried about people using these kinds of websites against government sites in e.g. the US. Everybody parrotting about Obama's campaign - he wouldn't have survived this!
  • John Kalain
I heard they took down Ahmadinejad's website within 48 hours. This must mean he's got a terrible server or really A LOT of people used pagereboot on his site. Probably the latter?
