I’ve never seen the movie nor read the book but I’m starting to think I should. Although the new red cover is definitely nice, I’m afraid it won’t be able to compete with the original image (bottom of page). With the white lettering the original is even more amazing.

I visited a great restaurant/bookshop this weekend in Brussels called Cook & Book where you can enjoy browsing books and eating in the same place. Although we ran out of cash so food wasn’t on our menu, the concept was great. But above all, the large format ‘Berbères’ photo prints of Serge Anton welcomed me in. These photos run on A1-sized posters and sell for something like € 4.800 (which would make more than 6.000 USD ?). But the detail on this limited edition of prints make it worth every cent (You can also settle for the calendar (A2) which costs a fraction of the price). At home I tried Googling this photographer but the results were rather slim. The image below is one of the few I found which’ resolution was high enough. I guess I have no excuse but to return to this place for further investigation.

The Huffington Post reports on a new poster by Shepard Fairey, created it in support of Aung San Suu Kyi in Burma. Fairey got really known with the poster he created for the Obama Campaign just like some other artists did (a.o. ISO/Scott Hansen with a print which is sadly not to the standard of the work he is most known for – see our review of his work). Fairey’s creation has made its way around the world on almost every media, from posters to coffee mugs and t-shirts and was later followed by a victory poster also worth mentioning. This poster for Burma follows his typical style: vectors and a color palette which is dominated by black, white/yellow and red. It’s amazing how he has produced such an immense body of work with this main focus on form instead of color which is probably to be traced back to his stencil background. The first time I heard of him was in Computer Arts magazine which posted something about influential viral artists and the Obey Giant stencil/sticker he produced (which I thought to be rather simplistic and non-wow).

As for the new poster, it is nothing spectacularly new but still a great piece of art. On his site, Fairey offers a free download of the print for people to support the democracy fight in Burma. Here below you can find his designs for George Orwell‘s Animal Farm and 1984 which I bumped into at the bookstore about a year ago. It must be said his guerilla style is excellent for literature like this.

I found this Flickr set of an art show in Basel where Fairey was present and which shows his creations in large mural format. I should see if this is coming to Brussels any time soon.

Angels & Demons is the movie I’m looking forward to the most this year. Although The Da Vinci Code movie was a disappointment,? I admit this might be due to the fact I watched it?in a park on a huge screen with bad sound through some old speakers (this is the place to watch for 2009′s edition all ye Brusselites). Friends talking about?Dan Brown‘s success with TDVC eventually lead me to reading bestseller.?Jesus’s offspring is a good read but it was the other book that convinced me. I’m actually glad they had a tryout with TDVC because this time they will get the movie totally right. I mean, that statue half angel half demon in the trailer?scared the living crap out of me.

Audrey Toutou?not being in this second movie is a bummer. I’ve seen the trailer to her newest movie due April this year and she is incredible. Let’s see what Ayelet Zurer has in store. For thos who haven’t?read the book the choice of Ewan McGregor should indicate his role in the story. I won’t give it away completely?but casting such a famous actor takes away all the mystery in this conspiracy story. His performance in Big Fish has convinced me he’ll do great job as the camerlingo.

The movie’s website is also worth looking at. Being a Flash enthusiast it?musters perfect integration of web technology and video. This is the direction we should be going in the long run (although the shorter the better)?with internet and tv/film convergence.

EDIT: In the mean while I’ve been doing some research and found the name of this statue. It’s the Elorahim (or sometimes called the Nephalem), a half demon half angel mentioned in one of the Apocrypha (the books excluded from most non-Catholic bibles and included in most Catholic ones). This creature lives between heaven and hell, torn between his loyalty to God and Satan at the same time. Demons are said to be unforgivable because they’ve chosen for the ‘fallen angel’. But this story talks about a demon who is so afraid of the ‘end of times’ (cf. demons being cast into pigs because they’re so afraid of Jesus) that he feels remorseful for his choice. But God won’t forgive him completely which leads to him wanting to be faithful to God (who rejects him) and unwillingly belonging to Satan’s underworld (who owns him).

Fiep Westendorp is one of the Netherlands’ most famous illustrators who is mostly known for her coöperation with Annie M.G. Schmidt. Schmidt is amongst others the writer of the children’s books Jip en Janneke (pictured below) and Pluk van de Petteflet.
I was having a discussion a few years ago whether children would actually enjoy these kinds of illustrations which are very appreciated by illustrators but represent a rather abstracted vision of reality. I remember as a kid I only realized both Jip en Janneke were actually black when I was about 12 years old. This somehow never registered and was not mentioned in the stories either. Makes you wonder if Schmidt and Westendorp used it as a graphic technique or if they chose black kids on purpose.
