Parcours d’Artistes in Brussels (Saint-Gilles) is an initiative where local artists open their homes for the public. I’ve been on similar tours elsewhere in Belgium and it’s always great fun to get the complete context of artworks and their creators. This time I was mostly struck by the great cover of their tour manual which was done by Tenfinger.

“The biennial artistic event happening in St-Gillis, Parcours d’Artistes, entrusted the design office Tenfinger with the visual campaign for its 2010 edition. The typographic work for this project was developed using both craft and play technics such as embroidery and pyrography.”

Very clever use of ‘pixelation’ by Mark Brooks which reminds me of some Soulwax posters I saw a few years back (for those who don’t see it – look at these images from a few feet distance). I’ve always wanted to have a look at the old printing process of newspapers when photos were still very pixelated black & white renderings (halftones), made up of hundreds of little dots still visible to the naked eye (as you can nowadays only find in smaller and low-budget papers such as my old university’s monthly). Love the catch phrase ‘distance yourself from the stars’ btw.

Album cover designs

Here are some albums you’d buy just for the cover. I heard something about Pete Doherty painting with his own blood, I sure hope this isn’t one of those. Coldplay‘s cover is truely way better than the ugly colored X&Y trying to look postmodern Mondriaan. Snow Patrol do a good job both music-wise and in their cover art. I’m still trying to figure out how to copy the paint effect The Black Keys used for their heads. Never heard of Bodycode but their cover looks great. The series used by the Foo Fighters in their booklet is great as well; the stark contrast of that font on a simple textured background is perfect for who they are. Band of Horses have a new album out (not the one pictures below) of which I don’t particularly like the cover. But is in line with their website which has a great feel to it. Kings of Leon is a little dry for an album, but somehow it does catch my attention every time I walk passed in the music store. White, black and red are a big no-no most of the time but here it works well seeing the red is already more towards orange? Oasis need no explanation. Their epic records in the beginning of their career had staged photos which are always a pleasure to watch. I’m still searching for larger prints of these. But their new album and forthcoming single introduce another fresh breeze into the Oasis saga.
